Blueprint for Democracy: Politics Girl

Blueprint for Democracy: Politics Girl

As part of the Riverside County Democratic Party’s Blueprint for Democracy series, Leigh McGowan, the dynamic voice behind PoliticsGirl, delivered an inspiring talk that underscored her mission to reconnect people with politics. Launching her YouTube channel in 2015 with the belief that “when you understand, you care, and when you care, you vote,” Leigh has since captivated millions with her accessible, no-nonsense approach to breaking down complex issues. During the 2020 election cycle, she reignited her platform on TikTok, using kitchen rants to engage younger voters in a way that felt personal and empowering. Her ability to distill intricate political topics into everyday language has earned her a devoted following of nearly 2 million across TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, Threads, Instagram, and Facebook. Her influence extends from grassroots audiences to leading politicians and celebrities, with her content garnering hundreds of millions of views and national attention, including features on MSNBC’s The 11th Hour.

Leigh’s impact goes beyond viral videos. As the creator and host of the PoliticsGirl Podcast, she has interviewed figures like White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain and Broadway star Alexandra Billings, while her solo episodes demystify topics ranging from the history of public education to the global rise of autocracy. Recognized for her role in shaping public opinion and contributing to election results, Leigh’s advocacy has even brought her to the White House to meet with President Biden and his staff. Through her tireless research, writing, and speaking, she continues to remind Americans that political understanding is the first step toward meaningful change.

“Sometimes, the Fight Takes a While.”

riversidecostg · November 11, 2024 ·

Words from our Chair, Joy Silver

“Sometimes, the Fight Takes a While.”

– Vice President Kamala Harris

Today, many of us feel like exiles in our own country, grappling with profound disappointment and concern for the future of American democracy. The recent election results have left us questioning the path ahead.

Vice President Kamala Harris, in her concession speech, reminded us: “The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for. But hear me when I say, the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting.”

To everyone who volunteered, worked on campaigns, knocked on doors, made calls, sent texts, and stood up for our shared values—to our courageous candidates and all who dedicated countless hours to defend and protect our freedom and democracy—we extend our deepest gratitude. Your commitment and unity have been a beacon of hope.

In moments of doubt, let us find solace in the words of Chief White Eagle of the Ponca Nation: “When you are in doubt, be still and wait; when doubt no longer exists for you, then go forward with courage. So long as mists envelop you, be still; be still until the sunlight pours through and dispels the mists—as it surely will. Then act with courage.”

As we navigate this challenging time, let us remember that even in darkness, the stars shine brightly. Our fight for freedom, justice, and democracy continues. We will never give up, and we will never go back.

Rest, Recover and Get Ready

Hi Everyone –

While we await the final results in contested seats across California, it’s fair to say the outcome of the race for the White House is far from what we hoped for.

As a result, many of us are feeling the pain and sadness of a tough loss. Yet, we are also filled with deep pride in the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz. Together, they and their team mounted an extraordinary campaign in the face of an unprecedented timeline and historic political headwinds. We are forever grateful for their service to our Nation and our Party.

As Vice President Harris says, “We believe in the promise of America.” Like you, I am prepared to fight to ensure that promise is alive and well for all Americans for generations to come. Simply put, so many are counting on us in this challenging moment in our Nation’s history. We must not let them down.

In the coming weeks and months, we will reflect on and reckon with the will of the American People – and what it means for our Nation and our Party. As California Democrats, we will continue to be an important voice and leader in that conversation.

We must remember that California remains the world’s fifth largest economy and 12 percent of the American population resides here. California Democrats continue to build upon strong majorities in the State Legislature, enshrine fundamental rights in the California Constitution and make significant investments in the future of our communities and our planet. I know that we will continue to be a beacon of hope to the rest of the Nation even in the darkest of times ahead.

We’ve always known the road to retaking the House of Representatives ran through California. Today that reality is truer than ever before. With tens of thousands of votes left to count, several battleground congressional seats in California are too close to call and the balance of power in the House is likely to rest on the outcome of these contests.

To every volunteer who knocked, called, texted, or gave, we are here because of you and your hard work. Thank you for all you’ve done and all you will do to recover and rebuild what has been lost.

In the coming days and weeks, we will continue to keep you updated with the latest results and what else may be required to win. Until then, get some well-deserved rest and get ready to get back into the fight. Because it will take all of us to protect all we hold dear and preserve the Democracy we love so much. And I know California Democrats will continue to lead the way!

Democratically Yours,

R/

Ken Calvert Must Step Up and Debate Will Rollins

Ken Calvert Must Step Up and Debate Will Rollins

Calvert Dodges Debates as Rollins Emerges as a Strong Alternative for
California’s 41st District

The Riverside County Democratic Party calls on Congressman Ken Calvert to respect the intelligence and expectations of his constituents by committing to a public debate with his challenger.

Despite multiple invitations and increasing pressure, Calvert has not agreed to debate. This reluctance to engage in a direct dialogue is not just a disservice to the voters; it also suggests a lack of confidence in his own record and positions.

Will Rollins holds a lead over Calvert, with 21% of the electorate undecided. A debate provides a unique opportunity for Calvert to sway the voters in his favor.  Perhaps he believes his record speaks for itself:

  • Calvert failed to disclose certain real estate investments that could benefit from federal funds he helped steer, raising questions about his transparency and ethics.
  • Calvert opposed environmental protections, including measures to address climate change. His ties to the oil and gas industry compromise his ability to represent the interests of Californians and the planet.
  • Calvert fought against vulnerable populations, having opposed efforts to expand access to healthcare for veterans and critical social services like childcare and food assistance.

Will Rollins has already accepted invitations to debate and is eager to discuss his vision for the district, which includes strengthening environmental protections, expanding healthcare access, and ensuring that government works for all Californians—not just the wealthy and well-connected.

Show a little backbone, Congressman. Step up and confront your record. The voters demand and deserve it.
