Resolution: Continue Efforts To Increase Racial Diversity After Affirmative Action Was Ended By The U.S. Supreme Court

Resolution

Continue Efforts To Increase Racial Diversity After Affirmative Action Was Ended By The U.S. Supreme Court

WHEREAS the mostly white, conservative portion of the United States Supreme Court overturned Affirmative Action in college admissions on June 29, 2023; and

WHEREAS evidence indicates that Affirmative Action helped increase racial diversity in higher education and that its discontinuance in California’s institutions of higher education has resulted in lowered diversity in those institutions; and

WHEREAS historically, due to structural and institutional racism, schools have been an integral part of discrimination against people of color, and with the decimation of affirmative action they will have more freedom to do so again;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Riverside County Democratic Party (RCDP) supports the increase of racial diversity in all schools, to encompass K-12 and Higher Education because diversity makes us stronger; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Riverside County Democratic Party (RCDP) will support policies that increase racial diversity in all of its involvements and activities because RCDP knows that in a democracy diverse voices and perspectives improve the quality of life of all citizens.

Bosworth Awards

The 2024 RCDP Bosworth Awards was a sold-out event as we honored our county party’s most outstanding volunteers as nominated by its chartered clubs and assembly districts. Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia managed to overcome a massive traffic issue to get there in time to give his acceptance speech. This was a lovely venue for an event on a beautiful spring day!

Resolution

Call for a Humanitarian Ceasefire in Gaza

WHEREAS Democrats are committed to the principles of human rihts, international law, and peaceful conflict resolution; and

WHEREAS the recent hostilities in Gaza in retaliation for the deadly attack on October 7, 2023 have created tragic consequences, leading to the loss of tens of thousands of innocent civilian lives, extensive destruction, suffering among both Israelis and Palestinians, and accusations of violations of international law; and

WHEREAS the National Democratic Party currently supports a negotiated two-state solution that ensures Israel’s future as a Jewish and Democratic state with recognized borders and upholds the riht of Palestinians to live in freedom and security in a viable state of their own.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Riverside County Democratic Party supports an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages for both humanitarian reasons and as a necessary prelude to a negotiated equitable settlement between Israel and the Palestinians.

Supreme Court Decision on Presidential Immunity

Supreme Court Decision on Presidential Immunity

In an unprecedented move, the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on presidential immunity has significantly escalated the stakes of the 2024 presidential election

Dateline: July 1, 2024

Riverside, CA – Not since Nixon’s infamous claim that “when the president does it, that means it is not illegal” has there been such an affront to the fundamental principle that birthed America: the chief executive is accountable to the people, not just to himself.

At the time, Nixon’s claim was given its proper response – mostly total derision. Who could possibly say with a straight face that the president could act with impunity?

Apparently, the United States Supreme Court.

The decision attempts to distinguish between “official” and “unofficial” acts. In her powerful dissent, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote that “The official-versus-unofficial act distinction seems both arbitrary and irrational, for it suggests that only the unofficial criminal acts of a President are worthy of prosecution. Quite to the contrary, it is when the President commits crimes using his unparalleled official powers that the risks of abuse and autocracy will be most dire.” Basically, she points out that these justices have been constructed by the court’s majority out of whole cloth. So much for not having activist justices on the bench.

In a twist of irony, all of this is happening just before July 4 – the day on which America celebrates its freedom from imperial rule. We thumbed our noses at one despotic king, only to now face the very real possibility of putting another one in office.

“We have only one job”, says Joy Silver, Riverside County Party Chair, “and that is to win”. Now more than ever, Democrats and others who believe in democracy must unify to get our Democratic candidates elected up and down the ballot, and that means voting for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Only with a full takeover of the House and the Senate then making sure our Democratic President the power to nominate the next supreme court justices, can we ever hope to avoid America’s descent into fascism under a Dictator. We must vote – while we still can.
